Welcome to the Come to Jesus Daily Devotional, posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Together, we’ve been journeying through our Luke: Exploring Who Jesus Is series. Following on from Easter, we’ve been focusing on the resurrection, and today we come to the final devotional in our Luke series.
In Luke 24, we see how Jesus takes ordinary, weak people and empowers them to be His witnesses.
You can watch this devotional below:
Jesus taught them
We come to the final verses of Luke’s Gospel. Jesus has risen. He has appeared to His disciples. He has opened their eyes and calmed their fears. And now, He opens their minds to understand the Scriptures and gives them their life’s purpose:
‘Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.”’ (Luke 24:45-48)
He take them from Confusion to Clarity
Jesus opens their minds so they can understand how the whole story of Scripture has always pointed to Him. This is what was written:
The Messiah must suffer
The Messiah must rise
The message must go out
God’s plan was never just about a personal faith and new life —it was about a universal restoration. Jesus gives His disciples a clear message and a clear mission.
You Are Witnesses
“You are witnesses of these things.” (v. 48)
Jesus doesn’t say, “You will become witnesses,” or “You might be useful someday.” He says, “you are...”!They had seen the cross. They had seen the empty tomb. They had seen the risen Lord. This was now their message—not just to treasure, but to share.
However, He wants them to know that they would not be doing this alone or in their own capacity:
‘“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”’ (Luke 24:49)
They would soon receive the Holy Spirit—God’s empowering presence for the mission ahead. This sets the stage for Luke: Part 2—the book of Acts.
From Luke to Acts
Luke ends his Gospel with a risen Saviour and a worshipping community (vv. 50–53). But the story isn’t over—it’s just beginning. In Acts, we see this commission fulfilled:
The Spirit comes at Pentecost (Acts 2).
The message spreads from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and begins to go to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
The disciples become bold witnesses, preaching repentance and forgiveness in Jesus' name.
Jesus’ mission continues even now. And we, too, are witnesses of these things—the same Spirit that filled us with faith, wants to send us so as to help others find faith and hope in Christ.
Today’s Encouragement
We finish our time in Luke by remember that Jesus takes ordinary, weak people and empowers them to be His witnesses. You are not just a believer—you are a witness. Jesus has opened your eyes, transformed your life, and sent you with a purpose. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from death is at work in you! The same Spirit who empowered the first disciples lives in you. Let’s Worship Him. Wait on Him. Be filled with His power. Let’s go and speak of what we’ve seen and experienced.
Let’s Pray Together
“Risen Lord Jesus, thank You for opening my eyes and showing me who You are. Fill me with Your Spirit, clothe me with power from on high, and send me as Your witness. Help me to speak of You with boldness, live for You with joy, and join in the mission of making You known. Amen.”
