#1210. How do we enjoy God’s peace? (3/1/24)

Welcome to this Come to Jesus Daily Devotional as we continue our Christmas series, Emmanuel, where we're reflecting on the promises regarding God coming to us in Jesus.  At present, I'm only posting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Today, from Isaiah 9:5-7, we reflect on how we can enjoy the peace of God each day.

‘Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.’ (Isaiah 9:5-7)

Today, as we finish our reflections on the great prophecy from Isaiah 9, I want us to consider how we can experience and enjoy peace in our lives. I often lack peace in my life. I’m sure that most of us would admit that we believe much about peace with God and the peace that He gives, whilst often not actually experiencing it.

Peace is experienced in two ways: firstly, there is ‘outer peace’ - we experience peace in good relationships and a harmonious life when things are going well for us. Secondly, there is ‘inner peace’ - as we experience peace in our emotions of calm and joy. God wants us to aim for inner and outer peace in the ways that He subscribes.

1. God’s way to ‘outer peace’

‘“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”’ (John 16:33)

Firstly, it’s important to remember that we will experience ‘trouble’ of various kinds. Sorrow, loss, sickness, fear, bullying, threat… will invade our lives on a regular basis. However, we can help to protect ourselves from much trouble and chaos by listening to Jesus, keeping in step with the Sprit, and choosing to obey Him rather than obeying the world, flesh and the devil. There is no ‘bulletproof’ life, but our health, relationships, work, finances… will be much more harmonious if we will listen to Jesus.

2. God’s way to ‘inner peace’

Jesus speaks of inner peace:

‘“All this I have spoken while still with you.  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”’ (John 14:25-27)

Jesus promises to continue to be with us, and continue to teach and reassure us, by The Spirit. Of Jesus, Isaiah prophesies” ‘He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…’ Jesus promises to ‘council’ us. Much of our inner ‘warring’ is due to anxiety and feeling out of control. Jesus urges us, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’ The way of actually dispelling fear is to listen, trust and be filled with the presence of Jesus. Replacing fear and lies with peace-giving truth is at the heart of spiritual warfare and spiritual welfare.

Let’s pray together

“Lord Jesus, firstly, help me to listen and follow your wisdom so as to have a peaceful life. Secondly, fill me, Holy Spirit, with your supernatural peace and ‘passes all understanding. I pray now for those whom I know need your wisdom and peace. Amen.”

Community Group Notes

Due to the Christmas break, I haven’t produced a study for Community Groups. If, however, you do decide to meet together, please choose one of the devotionals and discuss this together.

Note

Sunday services will be back as normal on Sunday 5th January.
